The Spanish guitar is one of the most used instruments worldwide. The reason why it is called Spanish guitar is because it was created as we know it in Spain, fruit of the work of Antonio de Torres and the perfection of all guitarists in Madrid and other places in Spain.
The basic form is the same throughout the World, although there are some nuances in terms of wood and construction. Classical guitars are usually high quality instruments with a rosewood body. The body of cypress is the standard in flamenco guitars, which also tend to have little ornamentation. The opposite of the Creole guitar of Argentina that is characterized by using many frets and decorations.
Some manufacturers like Ovation or Takamine have created different bodies and fused a steel guitar mast (the strings are closer together) with a typical Spanish guitar construction; giving rise to what in English they call guitar of nylon strings.
The Spanish guitar is characterized by using nylon or similar strings instead of steel strings. In fact, originally all guitars used gut strings until some builders like C.F. Martin in the United States made the structural changes to use steel wire.
The change of gut strings to nylon and its popularity is attributed to maestro Andrés Segovia in the 50s.
At the end of the 20th century, two new materials were introduced, such as fluorocarbon and nylgut (patented by Aquila).
What has always been the same is the material of the twisting of the three bass strings: copper covered with silver.
The first guitars used individual pegs similar to those of violins and cellos. They were hardwood pegs like rosewood or ebony.
Today, these plugs are only used in flamenco guitars because they are difficult to tune and are not as practical as gear systems.
These guitar tuning machines with gears have existed since the 19th century, although they were not popular until the middle of the 20th century. The axes of the pegs are plastic and are on the sides of the shovel.
