What is the ukulele?
The ukulele is a very simple musical instrument to play and also very fun. It is small, cheap and combines very well with the human voice because of the similarity of the ukulele register with the voice.
The ukulele was born in Hawaii, although its origin is the island of Madeira. From Hawaii, it was exported to the whole world thanks to the success of Hawaiian music with steel guitars. For a few years, it has resurfaced as a musical instrument of fashion among young people because it is cheap and easy to play.
What are the best strings for ukulele?
There is no answer to this question as different types of strings fit better with each ukulele and each musician. Usually we have four different types of materials:
- Natural gut was the first type of rope that existed and they are usually very expensive and last a short time because they break very easily.
- Nylon Since the 60s they have been the queens of the market and you will never go wrong if you buy a set of these strings.
- Fluorocarbon. This material is denser than nylon and the strings are thinner. They also have a more metallic sound (sharp) so sometimes do not like much, especially if you're going to plug in or touch with pick / fingernails.
- Nylgut. About 10 years ago, Aquila experimented with this material that imitates the natural gut. Since the decade of 2010 it has become the standard of quality of ukulele strings. They sound more serious and soft than those of nylon, but they have the problem of being a little more fragile and tend to fray. Another problem is that nylgut takes much longer than nylon to stabilize and when you change the strings, you will have several days to refine every moment.
Are the soprano strings valid for a concert ukulele?
In principle there is no big problem in putting a soprano strings to a concert ukulele, but you will notice a little more tension. In fact, there are many musicians who do this to get more tension on the strings.
